#7 Fasting for a Breakthrough
My go-to coping behavior, when overwhelming problems arise, is to fast. Gridlock among the team, fast. Need money, fast. Need more self-control, fast. When pain comes my way, fast. Need clear direction, fast. Such was the case when I was charged with recruiting table hosts to raise funds to build 200 hundred churches for 90 third world countries as a development officer for International Cooperating Ministries (icm.org). The idea was to have each table host sponsor the construction of a single church through a banquet. 9 months of hard work (100 table host), 1 month to go and we were only halfway there. A season of fasting culminated when our event chairman, suggested we recruit all the congregations scheduled to receive the benefit of a church building (90 countries) to join in prayer and fasting with our American team. The email was crafted and sent immediately. 24 hours later the phone rang at the office. One of our donor partners felt “prompted of the Holy Spirit” to make a matching gift, even if the price tag was a million dollars. He was unaware of our event challenge (from another state). He was given several options to make his investment, but when told of our event, he said, “That’s what I want to be apart of.” 9 months to raise 1 million. 24 hours to raise a matching 1 million. This miracle can only be attributed to God’s reply to the fervent prayers of thousands of his people coupled with fasting. God is waiting and watching, eager to demonstrates his power to an unbelieving world.
